Ubud is a very pleasant place for the suburban arts of shopping and dining. I had a wonderful few days with my friend and dive buddy Elizabeth, looking at clothes, crafts, art and wonderful food. The food here may be the best value on the planet. Literally world class gourmet food can be had for under $10 a head. There are cooking schools here, if you want to bring some of this good eating home. And the spas are also cheap and first rate. They get it here about relaxation - the yoga left coast kind, not the chain smoking euro beached whale variety. Here the sound, smells, interior design, and service are all part of the deliberate experience of a tranquil, pleasurable escape.
